How IT (Information Technology) Can Help Save Your Practice: Understanding HITECH
Are you ready for HITECH? Implementation rules begin in 2011 with 2012 mandates. Some of these rules involve:
Conversion of manual/paper records into electronic health records for patients.
Compliance with Federal Legislation for privacy and security of patient identifying health information.
To ensure that the software vendor is held accountable and in accordance with Federal Legislation when selling software to Practices; which includes, but not limited to:
- Password protection and hierarchy for levels of passwords within the practice.
- Encryption capabilities for exchanging patient identifying health information that includes integrity of file/messaging validation.
- Auditing capabilities including read-only access to patient records.
Did you know that penalties can be as high as $50,000 per episode, if you are in violation and found to have willfully neglected the rules without adhering to them? If you aren't familiar with HITECH, or you think that not having electronic records or that your vendor is responsible for these rules and therefore, you are safe, think again!
